Kris and Cindy are living life their way thanks to the NDIS
“Since joining the NDIS Kris is now living life to its fullest!” says Cindy, Kris’s mum.
Cindy is thrilled with the new opportunities her son Kris is now able to access through the NDIS. Cindy lives in Sydney with her husband and four children, triplet sons aged 22 and younger son aged 18. Kris, one of the triplets contracted meningitis on day 15 in the hospital and another two more times within five months.
With the help of his NDIS package, Kris is now a full-time team member at Avenue, the social entrepreneur program at service provider Fighting Chance. The program helps to identify the challenges, hurdles and barriers faced by people with disability in their everyday lives, and then design and build sustainable social enterprise businesses to bridge these gaps. Through his connection to Avenue program, Kris has been able to develop his social life and technical skills.
Kris keeps himself busy through the week across various avenues of work and community participation. The NDIS has helped Kris engage himself in tasks like helping out as a barista, stocktaking at the (local) café, doing office hub management – all the things that he’s been able to do with the assistance of the local service provider. Kris isn‘t stopping there; he has his goals set to open up his own small business – a goal that he and his mum are most proud of.
Despite his busy weekly schedule, Kris always makes time for his passion for rugby league and is a huge supporter of the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He’s able to attend games with his support worker (fortunately, also a Rabbitohs fan), meaning more independence from mum and dad.
“NDIS has helped me find my feet. I never thought I could be independent like my brothers and live a ‘normal’ life”, says Kris.
To give Kris the attention he has needed, Cindy has limited her working to weekends only when her husband and other three sons can take over caring for Kris. Now, with additional support made possible by the NDIS, Cindy has been able to more work during the week and have some weekends off to be with her whole family.
“I have always told my boys to dream big and don’t give up on those dreams. I never imagined Kris to be doing this too. With the support of the NDIS, the right providers that fit Kris’s needs, and a supportive family, I now believe Kris has a bright future ahead”, says Cindy.
